Often biohazard remediation (and its commonly used alternative, crime scene cleanup) gets confused with standard cleaning practices. However, the two services couldn’t be more different. Biohazard remediation refers to the removal, cleaning, and disinfection of blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially harmful pathogens in affected areas after a death, accident, or virus & disease outbreaks. Because of the high exposure risk to bloodborne pathogens, biohazard remediation is a specialty service that requires proper training, rigid safety practices, specialized equipment & cleaning agents, certification, and licensing.
In cases of a death or accident where blood is present, there is always a risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens (BBP) and biohazards ranging from viruses like Hepatitis, HIV, and COVID to bacteria like MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) or CRE (Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae). Statistics from the CDC show that approximately 1 in 24 people have either Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or HIV.

We verify our remediation process by testing with ATP tests, which measures the presence of microorganisms/pathogens, including bloodborne pathogens. Our meticulous remediation process allows us to reach a “0” reading of RLU (registered light units). Only when the test registers zero are we satisfied with the level of cleanliness. This ATP test adds technology, measurability, and accountability to our biohazard remediation process.

Unfortunately, trauma scene cleanup is the responsibility of the property owner. In most cases, homeowners insurance policies will cover the cost of remediation services. However, this is not guaranteed. You need to check with your insurance adjuster to be certain. It’s important to note that insurance companies cannot dictate who you use. We do have experience working directly with insurance companies for our services and can help you with the process.
It is not recommended to try and clean the scene yourself. There is a great deal of state and federal mandates that govern the bio-hazard cleanup industry. State and Federal mandates have been established regulating the collection, handling, and disposal of human bio-hazardous waste. Individuals and companies can face serious penalties for not adhering to these regulations. Personnel conducting hazardous collection and disposal are required to follow specific training and medical mandates set by state and federal agencies.

If possible, we do prefer to conduct a final walk through when the work is completed to ensure customer satisfaction. Our condo building had a basement intruder, a mentally ill and homeless man, who used our basement as his home for two nights, and, because we don’t have a bathroom down there, he soiled the concrete floor, left food garbage and alcohol bottles strewn about, and used a washing machine, which resulted in a thick lining of grease in the washtub. We called Hazard360 late at night. They had a courageous young lady arrive at our building first thing in the morning—Candy, a USMC veteran. I unlocked the door, and she put on our biohazard equipment and respirator, took in some cleaning supplies, and checked out the entire basement. She found the specific areas that had bio waste and other matter. Within thirty minutes, she had the basement cleaned, sanitized, and ready to be used. She hauled out the bio-waste in a red hazard bag and threw out the other garbage, all with a terrific attitude. She advised me not to go in with her because of the risk of drug-related diseases, HIV, hepatitis, COVID, and various bacteria. To her, we were a “minor” engagement.
